Stress Cardiomyopathy
by Michelle Morgan

Compression in the interstice between the vein and the
artery produces palpitations. Notice here how the
chamber throbs, beats, pauses, throbs. We confide, we
have yet no way of knowing the chemical changes
occurring. We are close to discovery.

On the diagram we have charted the various routes the
grief takes as it transverses the subject, marked here
with red arrows. Our patients report prolonged periods
of suffocation with intermittent bouts of sensations
ranging from lead chest to hollow drum. Other organs
appear to be involved to varying degrees. Upon
dissection you will see there is nothing wrong. There
is nothing wrong.

Michelle Morgan grew up in Sabattus, Maine and moved to Columbus, Ohio three years ago. She received her BA in Arts and Humanities from the University of Southern Maine in 2003, and currently works for the Upward Bound program at Ohio Wesleyan University. When she finds herself with a spare moment, she exhausts it by either writing or collaging. She likes to think of her collages and her poetry/prose as pushing the border of form while maintaining a deep relationship to the immense both within and without. This is her first publication, and she's thrilled to add her voice to the collective thrum.
