Submission GuidelinesJMWW is an online quarterly accepting fiction, nonfiction, poetry, art, and essays. We prefer at this time that work be sent as an MS Word attachment. Please do not submit more work (ie, bombard) until you have heard from us regarding your initial submission because we get confused easily. We publish Winter, Spring, Summer, and Fall issues in early January, April, July, and October, or thereabouts. We allow simultaneous submissions on the assumption that you let us know if your submission has been accepted elsewhere. We try to respond to submissions within one to three months, and we read year round. Please proofread your work before submitting. It often is best to allow someone else (ie, a pair of “fresh eyes”) to do so. We do not pay for accepted works at this time. Poetry: Submit up to three poems (no limit in length). Although we enjoy all types of poetry, we have a preference for free-verse poetry (ie, no rhyming, no couplets). We also prefer at this time not to receive poems addressing popular topics, such as unrequited love, politics, or September 11th, although we are the first to admit there is wonderful work out there dealing with such subjects. Fiction, Essays, Nonfiction: We accept works up to 25 pages double spaced, although 3000 words or fewer usually catches our eye. We like strong characters whose motivations are not always known to us but can be explained within the confines of common sense. We like surprise endings but not gimmicky ones. Any genre is accepted as long as the story is well-crafted. Flash Fiction: We like our flash under 1000. We think that Smokelong Quarterly publishes the best work out there, so if you think they'd like it, chances are we'll like it, too. We might even like it if Smokelong doesn't. Artwork: Please query. Upon acceptance, jmww acquires one-time and nonexclusive anthology rights. That is, rights revert to the individual creator of a work with the exception of an option to publish the work, whole or in part, in a future print anthology edition of jmww. This agreement is implicit unless otherwise negotiated between the author and publisher at time of acceptance. For more information or to submit, please contact us. Failure to comply by submission guidelines automatically results in your submission being deleted; we hate to be hard asses, but we have spent too much time over the years asking authors which three poems of eight they've like us to consider or for a shorter fiction submission, time that could be spent reading writers who took time to read our guidelines. |
