jmww JMWW is an online quarterly accepting fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and essays. Please do not submit more work (ie, bombard) until you have heard from us regarding your initial submission because we get confused easily. We publish Winter, Spring, Summer, and Fall issues in early January, April, July, and October, or thereabouts.
We allow simultaneous submissions on the assumption that you let us know if your submission has been accepted elsewhere. We try to respond to submissions within one to three months, and we read year round. Please proofread your work before submitting. It often is best to allow someone else (ie, a pair of fresh eyes, as the old cliché goes) to do so. We do not pay for accepted works at this time. Please note that we only consider previously unpublished works for publication,
Poetry: Please submit 4-6 poems of no more than two pages each, that give us an idea of your voice and poetic strengths. We aim to publish poetry that contains solid, riveting images, is emotionally complex, and that yields meaning beyond what is merely personal, thus having implications for others and/or society. We do not publish religious-themed poetry unless there is a marked reason for including such images or references in the poem. We admire poetry that makes an impact, whether soft or brash, that is felt in the body while reading, that is thoughtful and carefully wrought. Although we tend toward publishing free verse poems, those that use form, repetition, and rhyme scheme with unique purpose and talent are welcome, as are experimental poems if they are emotionally resonant, in addition to being intellectual or analytical. If submitting via our online submission manager, please be sure to include your full name, address, and email address on the first page of your submission, as well as a cover letter stating any past publications or other pertinent information.
Fiction, Essays, Nonfiction: We accept works up to 5000 words, although 3000 words or fewer usually catches our eye. We like strong characters whose motivations are not always known to us but can be explained within the confines of common sense. We like surprise endings but not gimmicky ones. Any genre is accepted as long as the story is well-crafted. Read our archives to get a sense of what we enjoy. We tend to move away from experimental or graphic or fiction with clever titles that is not fiction but is really some sort of nostalgic wet dream about your Sega 90s teenage mutant ninja childhood.
Flash Fiction: We like our flash under 1000. We think that Smokelong Quarterly publishes the best work out there, so if you think they'd like it, chances are we'll like it, too.
Upon acceptance, jmww acquires one-time and nonexclusive anthology rights. That is, rights revert to the individual creator of a work with the exception of an option to publish the work, whole or in part, in a future print anthology edition of jmww. This agreement is implicit unless otherwise negotiated between the author and publisher at time of acceptance. For more information or to submit, please contact us. Failure to comply by submission guidelines automatically results in your submission being deleted.
