Cartology
by L. Annette Binder
Hieroglyphs written by doctors
across the skin of your scalp, blue and violet
hatchings threading through the veins
where the skin is thinnest.
Parchment and paper and soft vellum,
all the stitches and all the medicine
leave no mark. Your eyes still shine
black as cherries and beneath the ink
your blood still beats.
L. Annette Binder was born in Germany and came to the United States as a child. She has an A.B. in Classics from Harvard, an M.A. in Comparative Literature from Berkeley, and a J.D. from Harvard Law School. Her fiction is forthcoming in Clapboard House, and she has just finished her first novel.
